I joined the Illinois Department of Transportation in November of 2017, as the Communications Center Manager for the Statewide Traffic Management Center, also known as Station One, in Springfield, Illinois. My previous experience includes 13 years with the Illinois Secretary of State Police, various local police departments as a sworn officer and as a telecommunicator, and as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic. This varied background has prepared me well for the position at IDOT.
I was handed a communications center with 2 workstations, 8 permanent part time staff, outdated work rules, and the responsibility of planning for a communications center upgrade. We quickly began formulating a plan to bring the staff, the room, and the policies and procedures forward to meet today’s demands and to be expandable to meet future needs. We began the design of a true Traffic Management Center which included finding a location within the IDOT Hanley Building, researching other centers to determine what worked and what didn’t, and working with Motorola to design the workspace and the technology to support the room. The project kicked off in July 2019 and opened in October 2020.
As a part of our Infrastructure Security Section, I also assist with emergency response. I was the IDOT liaison at the State Unified Area Command Post during the 2019 flood (May 31-June 20) and spearheaded efforts at distribution centers to provide PPE during the COVID pandemic (April-June, 2020).
